Dr Debra Betts (PhD)

Debra has a background in nursing and graduated with a Diploma in Acupuncture

from the London College of Acupuncture in 1989. Returning to New Zealand in 1991 she established a private practice specialising in pregnancy and women’s health care.

She began specifically developing and teaching acupuncture courses to midwives in

1997. This led to the publication of articles on the use of acupuncture in obstetric practice in 1999 and her book “The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth” in 2006. With the completion of her PhD on the use of acupuncture in threatened miscarriage she is currently the Director of Postgraduate Programmes for a masters blended learning course through New Zealand School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is also a supervisor at a hospital antenatal acupuncture clinic and lectures internationally on the use of acupuncture in obstetric care.

Lecture Plan: A comprehensive guide to using acupuncture in pregnancy, labour and postpartum

Saturday: 8am Registration, 8:30 - 5pm

Acupuncture in early pregnancy: treating with confidence during conception and the first

trimester.

 

Safety first:

Examining safe practice from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medical perspective. This includes the relevance of points labeled as “forbidden” in some acupuncture texts. Specifically their use in research, including animal models, use in China for medical abortion and their use in clinical practice from a survey of Australian and New Zealand acupuncturists. When to refer from a Western medical perspective for early pregnancy complications and the evidence for acupuncture as a safe therapy within the literature will also be presented.

 

Treatment planning for clinical practice:

Examining historical TCM concepts and the latest western medical research to determine what acupuncture treatment may be beneficial around the time of implantation and during very early pregnancy.

Treatment options for specific conditions using the latest evidence based research, case histories and a discussion on difficult cases for the treatment of specific conditions in the first trimester including:

            • Threatened miscarriage

            • Miscarriage

            • Nausea

            • Hyperemesis Gravidarum

 

Sunday: 8:30 - 5pm

Acupuncture use during the second trimester, labour and postpartum Information to assist acupuncturists to move away from point prescriptions to proactive treatment: encouraging optimal health during pregnancy and preparation for an efficient labour and postpartum recovery.

Presenting western medical research including safety considerations and when to refer, the latest evidence based research, case histories and a discussion on difficult cases for the treatment of specific conditions including:

Headaches & migraine, back pain, pubic symphysis pain and rib pain, digestive complaints, anemia, anxiety and depression, Gestational diabetes, Pregnancy induced hypertension,

Placenta previa, Intrauterine growth retardation, varicosities, pregnancy rashes, twin

pregnancies, breech and posterior positions, premature labour, prebirth treatment, induction, problems arising during labour and delivery, stillbirth, post caesarean section recovery, perineal healing, breast feeding; poor milk supply and mastitis and postpartum emotional factors.
